Frequently Asked Questions
HOW WILL MY PALS KNOW THAT I CAN REALLY STAND UP AND PADDLE?
The instructor will carry your phone or camera for you the entire time in a waterproof hip pack and take as many photos as you’d like!
WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?
We are based out of Coronado. We offer lessons in a couple of locations, primarily at Tidelands Park for bay tours, and just south of the Hotel Del for ocean lessons. The wind direction will determine where we paddle.
TIDELANDS PARK: Take your first right off the bridge, and your first right after that. Head toward the base of the bridge. We’ll paddle from that beach. See the map below.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
BAY TOUR: Try a bathing suit with a shirt or dress for a little sun protection. Although its unlikely, it’s possible you might fall in, so be prepared. Bring a hat, but leave your shoes at home.
OCEAN: Wetsuits are provided. Wear a bathing suit underneath.
WILL I LOSE MY SHADES?
Yes, if you fall in & don’t grab them, your sunglasses will sink.
WILL I GET WET?
In the bay- it depends. In the ocean, yes. A number of factors come into play: height, weight, age, athletic ability level, prior experience, board size, wind conditions, and your attitude.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO?
It’s best to go in the early mornings or early evenings (sunset) in order to avoid paddling against the wind, which can be unpleasant at its height. Check the tree tops outside. Remember the wind is always a little more intense along the coast. Ocean conditions change constantly. If you’re looking to book an ocean lesson, SUP’s staff will be able to let you know if they think the swell might be too high for you to start out on. Check the Daily Surf Report in the sidebar, too.
CAN I BRING MY DOG?
Absolutely! If you’ve got a a dog that loves the water and a little adventure then bring your buddy along. We are definitely dog-friendly!
ANYTHING ELSE?
Don’t forget your SUNSCREEN! It’s also a good idea to bring a towel, a windbreaker, some snacks, and extra water.
